Silent Film - Evening
With live piano accompaniment
By Maestro Tama Karena
Wednesday April 29 at 7:30pm
On this special evening, organized to acknowledge the 140th anniversary of the Neilson Hays Library, several short silent movies are shown, with live piano accompaniment by Tama Karena. In - between the movies is time to enjoy a glass of wine and the fabulous arts of the celebrations group exhibition showing in Neilson Hays Rotunda and Garden Galleries.
Of Maori descent, Tama Karean is one of 8 children the only one who has followed a career in Music. He studied under Maurice Till (MBE) from 1981 1986 at Canterbury University, Christchurch, New Zealand and successfully completed a Honours Degree in Music Performance Piano. In 2004, he graduated with a postgraduate degree in composition at Auckland University.
Tama has been a teacher of music since 1996. He currently works as an IB music teacher at New International School of Thailand where he accompanies and conducts the choir and orchestra and teaches classroom music
Tamas has performed in several other International Film Festivals throughout New Zealand, New Caledonia and Australia. Although the experience was nerve-wrecking at first, he quickly realised that musical accompaniments were the voice of silents and a true and honest form of communication thus giving him numerous opportunities to explore a wide range of musical talents
Over the past 12 years he has travelled several times to Italy to represent NZ as one of 10 international pianists who improvise musical piano accompaniments for silent feature films at La Giornate Del Cinema Muto in Pordenone (Northern Italy). The festival has been going for 30 years and is held every October and has drawn famous musicians and silent movie pianists from around the world.
Tickets are 250 THB. For reservation please contact the Neilson Hays Library at
